Surf Relief Day
On what was an amazing day for all concerned the Surf Relief Festival 2008 took place at Watergate Bay over the weekend of Friday 25th - Saturday 26 July 2008.
The background to this Festival is that it is a fundraiser for the Charity, Surf Relief UK, of which Christian Surfers UK have been involved at the fore right from the start. It was originally set up as Tsunami Surf Relief UK and supported work in Sri Lanka in the wake of the devastation wrought by the tsunami.
Phil Williams - National Director of Christian Surfers UK - is also a Trustee of Surf Relief UK who aims to assist disabled and disadvantaged youngsters giving them access to surfing through the ‘Surfable’ Programme.
This day is the main fundraiser for the year to provide the money needed to support this work. It was held at Watergate Bay for the 2nd year running.
The weather was beautifully warm and sunny with some good summer waves throughout the event for the UK Pro Surf Contest. With the sun setting over the sea and music headliners ‘Stereo MC’s’ sending out some great tunes, the evening was truly memorable.
Phil Williams co-ordinated the 40 volunteers, with around 25 of these coming from Christian Surfers UK - so a big thanks to all the team who worked tirelessly throughout the day.
David Renyard and Vicky Olobia acted as Contest judges, and Pip Renyard did a great job with Dave Read and the crew covering the tabulation side of things.
The fantastic news is that nearly £30,000 was raised - which nearly trebled the amount achieved in 2007. This came out of a great deal of hard work put in by the Surf Relief UK Chairman - Dave Manley, the Committee, Dave Read, Mike Searle, Phil Williams and huge input from the key sponsors - Whitestuff, Extreme Acadamy, Fifteens, Watergate Bay Hotel and other significant supporters.
The gallery page on the site gives you a flavour of this exciting day. We truly believe God blessed us with waves and weather for the event.
The next challenge for Christian Surfers UK is not only to man ‘Creation Fest’ this weekend, but also the Ripcurl Boardmasters next week. We are urgently looking for volunteers for both these events and would encourage you to get in touch with Dave Renyard on 07870 830182
Once again, a huge thanks to all involved in this amazing event. Christian Surfers UK throughout the day received thanks for their input, and very much believe that being part of the community is so important, and something like Surf Relief UK is at the heart of what we feel God is calling us to do - supporting the mainstream surf industry and assisting those less advantaged than ourselves.
