      Rip Curl Board Masters 2006

Once again this year Christian Surfers UK had a Christian presence at the Rip Curl Board Masters, Newquay, 31 July - 6 August 2006.  Traditionally CS have managed to secure a stall in the trade village, but this year due to the number of large sponsors, CS could only have their stall on one day.  However, this did not stop us as CS members attended the festival and helped out the organisers in all sorts of ways, including putting down the decking at the various venues and litter picking on each day, using our new trendy litter pickers which proved a great success.  Most importantly, we were able to pray over the venue via the public address system each day with a CS member committing the contest to God.

The organisers of the event spoke extremely kindly about the work of Christian Surfers UK, as they asked us daily to ‘bless’ the event.

We were also able to host some of the pro surfers, including two of the Christian guys – Cheyne Cotrell from South Africa and Will Tant from USA.  We had a great time of fellowship with them as well as seeing both get through to the 3rd round, which they were pretty pleased about as it went a long way to paying for their trip over, and gained valuable points on the WQS tour.

The team consisted of youngsters from the Nailsea crew, Dan and Naomi from Swansea, and the local Cornwall guys.  I am very grateful for their involvement and we are pleased to continue our involvement with the Board Masters.  Despite the set back of not having a stall this year, I know the work that the members did do throughout the week in the background to help it run so smoothly, was much appreciated by the organisers.

We now seek God’s guidance as to whether we apply for a stall next year and continue to assist the organisers. We will continue to partner with both Sports Vision and the British Professional Surf Association on the rest of the surf tour, starting with the St Ives contest over the August Bank holiday weekend.
