Tsunami Cup – September 1st and 2nd (Porthcawl Rest Bay, South Wales)
Despite the predicted completely flat conditions over the weekend 1st –2nd September, Christian Surfers UK and Welsh Coast Surf Club were able to put on the third Tsunami Cup event.
The original idea for this competition started just after the South East Asian Tsunami (December 26th 2004), when these two organisations wanted to assist areas of Sri Lanka hit by the disaster and decided to combine forces to make a difference to these devastated zones. Since then the cup has been run on an annual basis.
All the proceeds from the event went towards the work of Surf Relief UK, which is now focussing on the disabled and disadvantaged within the UK, as well as continuing the work in Sri Lanka.
Organisers arrived on the Saturday expecting to see completely flat conditions, but amazingly there were a few waves coming through. Whilst the morning was full of games, such as penalty shoot outs on the beach and the grassy area above, the tide started to push at about 4pm and the first heats could then enter the water.
The great thing about this event is that it has always been a charity fun raiser with everyone taking it in great spirit. Nobody complained about the poor surf conditions, but got involved and had a brilliant day, which finished around 6.50pm on the first evening.
Sunday dawned, and once the huge tides began to drop back, it was time for the finals of the four categories. In the Women’s event the final was closely fought for, with Ann Gallagher taking first place and Briege Lawrence coming in second. In the Juniors there was a great display of surfing in small conditions, and the category was won by Max Tucker with Rob Blythe coming second and George Schofield third. The Longboard final was won by Huw Bentley and, finally, the Open was taken by Tom Anderson in what was a tight competition, with Matt Davies coming a close second.
During the weekend everyone had the opportunity to buy raffle tickets for the signed Surf Relief UK board, and at the Christian Surfers UK gazebo pictures telling the story of Tsunami Surf Relief UK and Surf Relief UK were on display. There was also information given out as part of the Surf Cult Festival, which continues in Porthcawl over the rest of the week.
£300 was raised over the weekend, and it is hoped that by the end of the week of the Surf Cult and the charity auction which will take place at the surf club on Tuesday night, many more hundreds of pounds will be raised for the cause.
Finally, a big thanks to Christian Surfers UK, Welsh Coast Surf Club and the many sponsors, including Realm, On Fire, Elusive, Santa Cruz, and Porthcawl Surf, for providing goods for not only the contest, but also the auction.
Also a huge thanks to all the helpers and the competitors who made the day a great event, despite the small conditions.
