Small but clean conditions sees the 6th Jesus Longboard Classic end in style.

With a small swell forecast for the weekend, a full list of entrants, Polzeath was all set for the 6th Jesus longboard classic over the weekend of October 6th-7th. Organisers Christian surfers in partnership the ‘Tubestation’, have been organising this event since it was separated from the Jesus surf classic held at Croyde in 2006.

Saturday dawned with a slightly smaller swell than had been hoped for and predicted, but a beautiful sunny autumn day, with around 2ft of clean swell moving into the bay. The action got on after the surfers have been treated to breakfast at Tube station, with 7 heats of the masters.

By the end of the Saturday, at around 6pm, all divisions had reached the semi final stage, after 26 heats had been surfed. That night Christian Surfers held the European premier of the new longboarding movie ‘Flux’ at the Tubestation to a packed appreciative crowd. After a few prayers were said overnight for waves the next morning, contest organisers were relieved to see solid 2ft waves rolling in to the bay, with light offshore winds. All the surfers were invited to breakfast and a very simple ‘Surfers Blessing’ at the ‘Tubestation’ church, which turned out to be a great celebration for all involved.

Heats ran through to mid afternoon until the men’s open final concluded at around 2.30pm.As in previous years the event was supported by Cornish based longboard specialists “Nineplus”, and Polzeath’s community church “Tubestation”, who provided a first rate contest hospitality venue. This year the event was also supported by ‘Treleavens Ice cream, Finisterre Clothing and 360 photography. The two-day event saw over eighty competitors battling it out in four categories: Women’s Open, Juniors, Masters, and Open divisions.

With the largest number of Masters competing in this year’s event it made for a really competitive division, with Llantwits Colin Bright taking the title ahead of the ‘evergreen’ Eric Davies, Plymouth’s Gary Calladine, and Rob Davin from TauntonIt was great to see such a high quality of surfing from the younger surfers, with the clear stand out in the Junior division being Connor Griffiths (Current Welsh Junior & BLU Longboard Champion) who went all the way to take the title. North Devon’s Jack Unsworth took 2nd, Aaron Bright 3rd, and 13 year old George Hudson doing fantastically well in 4th.The Ladies division was also tightly contested but Barnstaple’s Claire Smail eventually took her 1st Jesus Longboard title, Davina Stickley was 2nd with St Agnes’s Nicola Bunt 3rd and Maisie Marshall competing strongly but taking 4th.

With the late withdrawal of Ben Skinner (Back problem) the Open title was suddenly even more wide open, but with previous winner Ben Haworth in the frame, competition was always going to be fierce. However for the 1st time ever ‘Local boy’ Angus Murray took the title and the £250 prize money. He was so stoked, that all his training and practice had finally paid off.

At a packed presentation he shared a few words of thanks to the organisers, and his fellow competitors Ben Haworth 2nd, Connor Griffiths 3rd, and once again George Hudson doing fantastically to get to the final in 4th.By the feedback received, it had been a very well received and run event, so a big thanks to all involved especially all the Christian Surfers volunteers, and Era for the water cover. Also a big thanks to the surfers of Polzeath for letting us use the beach, and finally a big thanks to God for providing enough clean offshore waves to complete this hugely popular event.

The next big challenge for the Christian surfers team is the 20th anniversary Jesus Surf Classic which will be held at Croyde Bay. This weekend (13th-14th October). This event is virtually full already with over 100 competitors already entered.

Christian surfers want to make this a celebration of the event over the last 20 years. If you want to check see there are any places still available, log onto or e-mail Phil Williams Check in is at 8 AM on Saturday
