Simply On A Mission

Christian Surfers UK

28th March 2012

Christian Surfers leaders from around the country have just held a weekend together in order to plan ahead for this Olympic year summer activities.

Christian Surfers has been at the heart of the UKís surf scene for the past 20 years, and have around 400 members throughout the country. In such a momentous year as this, group leaders from around the country descended on Croyde, North Devon for their annual gathering, in order to pray and plan for the year ahead. They also heard about the many exciting new projects that Christian Surfers are involved in this year, not only in the UK, but in wider Europe, and amongst the ministries in around 30 Countries.

The weekend was spent in great weather at Croyde North Devon. Amidst the beautiful setting of Baggy Point, great accommodation and superb food the group of 20 surfing Ďmissionariesí began by sharing about the amazing things God has been doing on our beaches around the UK. The most common thread that came through over the weekend was the diverse ways in which Christian Surfers groups serve their local communities. From events like beach cleaning, serving refreshments at competitions and providing logistical support to the UK Pro Surf Tour, Christian Surfers UK continue to build lasting relationships with all sectors of the surfing world.

Exciting plans in 2012 include the strengthening of church partnerships, running surf camps, and setting up leadership training weekends.

As an organization CSUK is planning to link with churches of all denominations as they seek to be a bridge between the beach and the church.

Itís exciting to hear about partnerships already in place such as the 'Tubestation' in Polzeath and CSUK is keen to build other such strong links.

Continuing partnerships with the surfing community are also vital. Phil Williams (National Director) mentions that it is such a privilege to be part of the process, and energy, which is seeing a new surfing National Governing Body being set up.

Christian Surfers UK is also about connecting with the grassroots level of surfing. Each local group is passionate about seeing people grow in their Christian faith and enjoy the experience of being in creation which surfing brings.

It is with great excitement that CSUK are planning surf camps through the summer of 2012, so that people who do not normally have access to surfing or who have not had an experience of the Christian faith can come together for a weekend of enjoying the unique experience of riding waves.

Looking further ahead into the year, plans are being made for the National Conference in June and for the 20th Jesus Surf Classic also held in Croyde in September. This is one of the UKís longest running, and biggest surf competitions and this year will be even more special. A fantastic opportunity to share the Christian faith in a relevant way, to around 120 of the UKís top surfers.
