Simply On A Mission

Christian Surfers UK

16th February 2011

After an adventure filled drive to Seaton, including thick fog and a u-turn in front of the toll gates for the Tamar Bridge (we missed the turning for Seaton), I arrived to a scrap of paper with a half complete, hand written running order, a tea urn that wasn’t working, no judging sheets and competitors in the water! But this is what grass roots surf contests are all about! We soon had everything in order thanks to the local photocopier and a new urn; the 2011 Ice Cube Surf Classic could begin. This was the forth running of the contest held by South East Cornwall Surf Club, which brings the whole surf community together for a fun filled day at the beach.

Once again the contest was blessed with a huge South-West swell that pushed up the south coast and light offshore winds that presented the competitors with clean head high waves all day. The judges saw some great surfing, especially from the local and travelling groms. Taz Knight was once again a stand out and continues to improve. The Smith brothers also put on a good show, with Jack taking the wave of the day, a great achievement for him, after coming back from several injuries. The under 16 category was once again a close battle between Taz Knight, from Croyde and local Ed Smith. This year it was Taz who took the win with an impressive performance in the final. The self named ‘Dirty South’ team took the team event and Robbie Roseveare won the under 12s. For a full run down of the results check out

Christian Surfers have been involved in this event for a few years now and we were again asked to come and help out with the judging and running the contest. It was a great opportunity to build relationships with the surf community in South East Cornwall, who always make us very welcome and look after us well. A big thanks to the judges Matt Parrot and Tom Wagg, from CS Porthtowan and Gary Calledine from Plymouth. Thanks to the CS crew from Plymouth, Jen, Lawrence and Paul and Dan and Sam from Falmouth for keeping the contest running smoothly.

After the contest we went back the Smith’s house where Jan cooked us up a great feed at short notice and we heard tales from Kev. In the evening it was off to the local pub for the after party and prize giving.

Thanks again to all the CS crew that helped out and thanks to the South East Cornwall Surf Club for a great day and looking after us so well. Finally, a big thanks to God for providing a great swell and sunshine – in February!David
