UK Pro Surf Tour - Porthcawl
2nd November 2009
This years UK Pro Surf Tour has been anadventure, not knowing exactly when or where the next contest willbe. A big thanks has to go to AXL/DOH, one of the UK's biggestdistributors, for making this event happen and taking the Tour toWales for another year.
The reports where showing horrendouswinds and rain for Sunday so it was decided to run the whole event onSaturday, which saw a building swell providing 2-4ft waves andchangeable conditions. With the year coming to an end and the top ofthe Ratings looking super tight there was a lot to lose and gain forthe top five surfers.
Christian Surfers where invited toserve the event by providing teas and coffees and refreshments to thesurfers and staff members and with the running of the events. We alsowhere able to provide our newly purchased events trailer, which madea great base for the tabulating and commentary team, giving a goodtest for future events. Myself and Phil Williams where also on thejudging panel, so it was great to see Christian Surfers able to serveand support the event in all areas.
A big thanks to the Welsh crew forturning out in good numbers to serve and support the event, especially to Johnny for organising the team and his hospitality.
With the conditions and peaks changingall the time as the tide pushed in, the surfers where faced with somechallenging conditions and had to adapt from heat to heat. The eventsaw a return to form from two surfers, Oli Adams and Johnny Fryer, with Oli taking the win after a difficult year due to illness. It wasclear form Oli's emotional winning speech that it meant a great dealto him. Johnny Fryer has struggled in the last few contests on theTour and it was great to see him find some form and surfed well inthe tough conditions to take second. Podium regulars Mark Harris andRussell Winter took third and fourth with some familiar powerfulsurfing.
In the Under 16 division Leon Mansfield surfed outstandingly to take the title.
Christian Surferswill be at the final UK Pro Surf Tour contest of 2009 at Fistral,Newquay. If you would like to help out, contact David Renyard firstname.lastname@example.org or call 07870830182
