UK Pro Surf Tour - Tynemouth
28th October 2009
Normally the contest in Tynemouth is the first leg in the Triple Crown series, but due to a lack of sponsorship it was held as a stand alone event.
The contest was part of a larger event being held over the weekend, the Xperience fetival, were they have snowboarding, skateboarding, graffitti as well as the surf contest.
It was a long drive for what turned out to be a one day event, but it was well worth it!
Christian Surfers UK were asked to provide teas and coffees and a beach marshal and I was on the judging panel. With the strong winds and miserable weather the hot drinks were well appreciated by the surfers and staff, and the CS marquee made for a great shelter to view the action.
The surf in the North East can be inconsisitant and the waves through Saturday were a bit changable, but as the day went on and the tide pushed in it got better and better. The cherry on the cake for the day was during the 2o minute break before the final the sky, having been full of clouds and pouring with rain, totally cleared; the sun came out and the wind went off shore!
The contest was won by Russel Winter in a very close final with 17 year old Toby Donachie, Mark Harris and Reubyn Pearce. Toby was leading for much of the final and was the stand out for the contest, but Russel managed to snaeak a high scoring wave right at the end of the heat to take the win.
Christian Surfers will be at the next UK Pro Surf Tour contest at Rest Bay, Porthcawl. If you would like to help out serving refreshments and generally helping out, then contact David Renyard at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 07870830182
