Tsunami Cup takes place in great conditions

7th December 2008

Organisers Welsh Coast Surf Club, and Christian Surfers UK we very pleased with the success of the 2008 Tsunami Cup. The event was held on Saturday 6th December at Rest Bay, Porthcawl.

The event which had been postponed from September is a fundraiser for Surf Relief UK. Conditions for the start was a cold 1 degree centigrade, but the swell was clean at around 3ft, and the winter sun was shining.
The original idea for this competition started after the South East Asian Tsunami
(December 26th 2004), when these two organisations wanted to assist areas of Sri Lanka hit by the disaster and decided to combine forces to raise funds for the devastated areas.  Since then the cup has been run on an annual basis.
Rob Blythe was on fire for this event taking both the Open and the Longboard titles. The women’s event was won by Holly Gwazdacz, ahead of Olivia Tate, and Rhiannon Tate. In the Longboard event Dan Evans, took 3rd place but beaten by Steve Horn in 2nd, and Rob Blythe taking the title.

The Junior event had a good contingent from West Wales entered, as well as the locals, and in a tough and close final Keifer Thompson took the title for the first time. Thomas Padden was 2nd, and Ezra Hanes took 3rd spot ahead of Sam Bailey. Many of the ‘top’ names who enter were still representing Wales at the European Juniors in Morocco, but the standard was still very high.
With over 20 entries in the Open event, it was always going to be very competitive. With the sun beginning to set and the tide dropping the final went ahead in very contestable conditions. All 4 finalists got off the starting blocks pretty quickly, with some early high scoring waves. The final was pretty tight all the way through, but in the end last years champion Tom Anderson was beaten into 2nd place by Rob Blythe. Greg Owen placed 3rd just a head of Harry Cromwell.

The presentation took place, shortly after the final, with some great prizes and trophies for all finalists. The organisers would like to thanks all the sponsors including The Realm, Santa Cruz, Lobster Bob, Elusive, Double Overhead, Red Bull
and SBT (surfboard tracker) who donated a Viking Surfboard to the winner in the open.
Over £200 was raised towards the work of Surf Relief UK, which is now focussing on giving access to surfing for the disabled and disadvantaged within the UK.
